7 More Ways To Lose Weight

Monday 4 May 2009

weightlossSure, you tried calorie restriction. But sometimes you just can’t escape eating a sweet or two.

You might exercise, but not as much as you need to.

You eat the low calorie versions of foods, but you just end up eating more of them. [Low Calorie Diet]

You take the before and after pictures, yet they never seem to change. Don’t sweat it (or do).

Weight loss is incredibly tough and some methods might not work for everyone. If you just can’t seem to melt it off, consider trying some of these other methods.

1. Tell everyone, including your family

Tell everyone that you will lose weight. Don’t just tell them that you plan on losing weight. Insist that you will lose weight. Then, you will find it all the more difficult not to lose weight.

Why? You will be afraid to lose your integrity. Plus, if you tell everyone, they will be less likely to do things that might sabotage your efforts, like bringing you junk food or sweets.

2. Lose yourself

Distract yourself while exercising. Listen to music. Watch a good movie. Play a game. Do anything that will distract you from the fact that you’re exercising. This is part of the success of the Wii.

Can Calcium And Vitamin D Help You Lose Weight?

Tuesday 28 April 2009

vitamin d supplementIf you are not getting enough calcium in your weight loss diet, adding a calcium and vitamin D supplement can help you lose body fat or so, suggests a new small research study.

The study compared women participants on a low fat diet over the course of 15 weeks.

Some of the women dieters took a calcium and vitamin D supplement, while others took a placebo or non-active version instead.

Differences between the groups seemed minimal at best, until the researchers looked at women whose intake of calcium had been very low—600 milligrams or less daily—before the study began. In those women, the supplement seemed to help the women lose more body fat, and seemed to help them crave fatty food less.

Researchers theorize that having adequate calcium and vitamin D may help prevent cravings. The recommended daily allowance of calcium for women ages 19 to 50 is 1,000 mg. per day.

If you are already consuming adequate calcium, supplementing to a greater degree is unlikely to have any weight loss benefit. If your intake is inadequate, however, as many women’s is, a supplement may help you with those last few stubborn pounds.

Do Buffets Contribute To Weight Loss?

Monday 27 April 2009

buffetsBuffets seem like a bane to Americans who want to avoid putting on weight.

All-you-can-eat meals can increase the temptation to overeat, especially when you haven’t yet gotten around to that sweet and sour chicken.

Ross Brownson of George Warren Brown School of Social Work agrees.

Brownson explained that among lower income Americans, buffets and cafeterias can give obese Americans access to large amounts of food.

Based on surveys conducted, those with lower incomes who are obese are also the most likely to eat at buffets, cafeterias and fast food restaurants.

Can buffets make you eat less?

We might intuitively think that buffets are obvious sources of overeating, but in some cases buffets can actually decrease eating.

The key fact about buffets is that diners are able to better control the amount of food that they eat.

This is contrasted by most restaurants that have controlled proportions. Customers who are given large amounts of food are more likely to eat them. But when proportions are chosen, diners have more flexibility to control how much they eat.

Avoid Weight Loss Scams

Monday 20 April 2009

weight loss scamsWeight loss scams abound that provide little or no weight loss benefit.

Since losing weight can be challenging enough and since obesity is so rampant, it’s despicable that anyone would want to take advantage of those who simply want to improve their health.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to avoid weight loss scams.

The evidence is shady

Many weight loss scams use strange clinical trials, make outrageous claims and claim that their weight loss secret must be hidden from doctors bent on stopping them.

Many of these gadgets, gizmos and drugs such as electrostimulators and miracle weight loss patches go against everything that we know about the human body.

Despite what these products claim, the only weight loss methods that have ever worked always involve burning more calories than are consumed, rather than using some miraculous weight loss products to make the fat magically disappear.

The product is sold through mysterious vendors

Is the mind-blowing diet secret sold only through underground companies that must resort to the Internet and spamming in order to get their secret out?

Adult Brown Fat May Help Weight Loss

Wednesday 15 April 2009

brown fatThere is a certain type of fat known as adipose tissue, or brown fat that is found in young children and babies that is activated by cold and helps the body keep warm, it actually helps in burning calories.

Until recently, it has been deemed pretty unlikely that this substance is found in adults however, Dr. Aaron Cypess the leading researcher of the study carried out at Boston’s Joslin Diabetes Center is excited about his team’s discovery.

They looked at PET-CT scans taken on almost two thousand people and found some interesting results.

Older subjects, who were overweight or using certain drugs had a lot less of the brown fat than those who were trimmer and more youthful.

Winter scans showed up more fat than any performed in the warmer months. Two other teams of scientists have come up with similar findings.

One in the Netherlands and another in Sweden, all seem to have found the elusive brown fat that was assumed to only be found in babies. The Swedish team examined five subjects and put them through a variety of cold temperature environments to see the results.

3 Reasons Why It’s Hard To Lose Weight

Monday 13 April 2009

lose weight2There are three reasons that an overwhelming number of dieters struggle to stick to their diet programs.

Once these reasons are conquered, weight loss should be a breeze.

As we know, weight loss is achieved by burning more calories than consumed.

Those who want to lose weight should simply eat less and exercise more.

But there are many biological and psychological factors that fight our well-intentioned urge to lose weight.

Each of these reasons have been reported by an overwhelming 70% or more of dieters to be factors in why they struggle to lose weight.

1. A lack of motivation

The days in which we are motivated to exercise might fluctuate. We often feel highly motivated when we first start our dieting programs. We feel on top of the world and able to easily restrict our eating.

But as our days oscillate and as the original trigger for our desire to diet vanishes, we might begin to lose motivation. [Weight loss Motivation]

Why is this so hard? Because we can only consciously focus on our desire to lose weight until other parts of life begin to distract us. When our lives are filled with distractions, we are more likely to return to old habits.

Drinks May Be Your Problem Not Food

Wednesday 8 April 2009

drinksIt is often the hidden calories in drinks that cause more weight gain than food.

Sweetened beverages are seen as a bit factor towards obesity levels and new research has shed further light on this matter.

A team of researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health have proved that reducing the intake of liquids is more likely to help in weight loss than in the lessening of calorie intake from food. [Low Calorie Diet]

It was only the drinks sweetened with sugar that made a difference as opposed to chemically created sweeteners.

Seven types of beverages were studied for the tests, these included fruit drinks, milk, diet products, tea and coffee. Over thirty percent of the liquid calories were actually sweetened with sugar.

Studies show that by the year 2015 over seventy five percent of Americans will be obese. It is thought that the reduction of sugar ladened drinks consumed by the population could ultimately save lives.

The Johns Hopkins School looked at over eight hundred people aged between 25 and 79 years of age. This took place over an eighteen month period and one of the authors Benjamin Caballero stated that they measured weight and height along with an unannounced recall interview of participants.

How Oolong Tea Aids In Weight Loss?

Saturday 28 March 2009

oolong teaWhen it comes to teas, green tea is not the only one that provides weight loss benefits; teas like black tea, oolong tea and even white tea also go a long way to doing this.

Surprising though it may sound, all these teas are derived from the same plant, called Camillia Sinensis.

For instance, green tea is pulled out and then dried, while oolong tea is oxidized and dried afterwards, which is why oolong tea looks so dark.

Weight loss benefits of oolong tea:

  • Oolong tea is healthy to drink because of the polyphenols in it. Polyphenols function similar to antioxidants in your body. As tea adds no calories, polyphenols make it a good beverage for dieticians. As the tea is high in polyphenols, it is nutrient-dense. It is a known fact that any diet rich in nutrients can promote healthy weight loss. Also, polyphenols block dietary fat from entering into your body.
  • The other benefit of oolong tea is the caffeine in it. Caffeine is a stimulant that helps your body lose weight. Oolong tea doesn’t have high caffeine levels, so it works slowly.
  • Studies show that oolong tea boosts fat-burning capability and increases the metabolism.
